Description

There are certain expectations to a Bomberman game: Simple puzzles, plenty of maze-running monsters to decimate, and, of course, bombs and power-ups. Though you might expect a bare minimum Bomberman on the iPhone, Hudson spared little for its maiden voyage to Apple's new App Store. It sports fine production, while maintaining that simple to pick up, tough to master gameplay.

Bomber John and his companion Dr. Bobal crash land during a search for rumored treasure. After the crash, they must fight their way to the gold buried within an ancient temple, setting the stage for the various levels you'll traverse. Beautifully drawn panels between missions push the story along.

The game does not stray from Bomberman mechanics fans love. Just place bombs to clear a path or take down enemies and evade perils, such as the flame bursts of your bombs. I was curious how the controls would work the iPhone's touch screen. You move your hero with a virtual d-pad. Touch any part of the map and it becomes the center of the d-pad. Drag where you want to go and Bomberman follows. To place bombs, tap the big, friendly bomb icon.

During the game, you're given choices on what paths to take as you break into the temple, adding some replay value to the game. Different routes will offer different challenges. The object is always the same -- kill all baddies on-screen -- but as you get further into the game, it proves easier said than done. Some stages pit you against a totem that generates monsters, while others have you facing ghosts that can float over any obstacle in their path.

As you progress, you track down bonus items, helping you out on your way to treasure. Things like extra bombs or damage modifiers act as an incentive to stay alive. When you die during your adventure, these bonuses decrease, eventually going back down to their minimum states.

Bomberman looks quite good, with crisp visuals and zero slow down. The jungle setting is a good theme (and timely, considering the new Indiana Jones movie). The animation is a touch weak, though, which was a slight disappointment. The in-game music is strong, but if you'd rather blow up enemies while listening to the Gorillaz, nobody will blame you.
